In a time like today when we face the possible repression of our people, it behooves us to examine history. A National Book Award finalist this book deserves all its awards. Laurie Halse Anderson did that in her trilogy beginning with Chains.

A pillar in historical fiction and children’s literature, this trilogy is well worth the addition to anyone’s library.Some books just blow you away. This, in and of itself, is the hardest struggle of all. Though not perfect, it is still a great testimony of the strength and reward someone has when they conquer and overcome their struggles both inward and outward and the peace they can feel by speaking their truth. With such a shining story, it would be nearly impossible for it not to be. In a whole, this audiobook is of a high caliber. Overall, a good performance from her - but a miscast nonetheless. In this conclusion, the narrator is much younger with a lighter and less seasoned voice. In the recording of the first novel, the narrator was perfectly cast - an older woman chose to narrate the story, as if reflecting back upon it. However, it is her voice that did not suite the piece. She reads it well, voicing all the characters with distinct tones and dialects.

It is only by the merit of the narrator that the performance garnered three stars from me. Despite the story in this conclusion being both heartfelt and powerful, the performance was lacking slightly. Anderson crafts an accurate depiction based on multiple sources. It is no surprise they are like this for Mrs. As though once real people, their essence blazes brightly with their impactful insight into life. Not only do the characters seem fully realized, but they feel alive as well. The story of this trilogy’s characters is one of the best in historical fiction. A very satisfying conclusion!Īn amazing conclusion filled with heart, struggle, and triumph!

The characters we met in Chains are older and have gone through a lot, but it isn't hard to empathize with their struggle to find freedom and peace amidst the country's struggle for the same things. The story of Isabel, Corzon and Ruth was compelling as well. It made me sad to read it with two hundred plus years of hindsight, realizing how long the struggle would continue for ever basic civil rights. Yet, she also shows why so many were willing to sacrifice for a country that wasn't offering them freedom, because they believed that they needed to fight to gain their freedom. I love the historical accuracy of the book and Anderson's unflinching honesty about what life was like for enslaved and free blacks during the Revolution with both sides using their desire for freedom against them. All that is forgotten in my love of this conclusion. Forge was good, but suffered from middle book syndrome. So glad I finally got around to listening to this book.
